Aurally Alarming , Use Of Sound In Blue Velvet Essays - Fiction

Aurally Alarming , Use Of Sound In Blue Velvet Aurally Alarming With Blue Velvet, David Lynch worked admirably in partitioning both well known and basic conclusions about his odd bit of film. While some hail it as an artful culmination, others hold that it is unadulterated unreasonable gibberish. Notwithstanding the underlying stun of the excessively rough arrangements, Lynchs striking disclosure of evil and debasement in modest community America comes to its meaningful conclusion obviously, if not oddly. One of the most evident and successful ways by which the movies subjects are passed on is through a totally splendid use of sound and score. Like how publicizing organizations pair food promotions with adoration scene type music, or make sock-manikin hounds talk, there is something else entirely to a scene than the image. The utilization of this filmic feeling of sound gives Blue Velvet an overwhelming heartbeat to the profound, dim world underneath the triviality of Lumberton. David Lynch, alongside Angelo Badalamenti, made the score to this film, working close with sound originator Alan Splet. The score, comprising for the most part of inadequate horns and strings, is unobtrusive and sensational, inferring components of great tension and murder-puzzle film scoring. The climactic standoff scene, wherein Frank and Jeffery go up against one another a last time, catches what is basically the movies most noteworthy utilization of score and sound to sustain (while, on occasion, incidentally comparing) the savage, energizing scene. Essentially no solid goes with the scenes start, Jeffery climbing the steps to and entering Dorothys condo. The surrounding hints of his footfalls and the keys, enhanced by an incidental emotional harmony struck in a minor key make an unpropitious strain that is obvious to the watcher. The scene holds its essentially quiet tone as Jeffery ventures into the loft to the horrifying scene inside. The quietness here is deliberate in that Jeffery is quiet as he lurks around, and the carcasses of the Yellow man and Dorothys spouse are quiet as of now since they are, well, dead. The calm is penetrated by an ear-splitting whimper, the TV is crushed in however turned on, and is emanating a piercing murmur (Dirks). The sound that crushes the quietness is a boisterous transmission from the Yellow keeps an eye on police radio, evoking an after death jerk from the dead man, and a terrified bounce from both Jeffery and the watcher. Everything comes back to quietness, until the radio barks up once more, revealing the assault on Franks loft. Next are scenes from the strike, cut with scenes of Jeffery in the condo, as Love Letters plays. Jeffery understands that the scene before him genuinely is a case of one of Franks love letters directly from the heart. With tears in his eyes, and as the line Im not the only one in the night plays over the scene, Jeffery says to the bodies, Im going to let them discover you all alone. The playing of this sweet love melody stands out dazzlingly from the savage police strike and the nearby ups of the expired in the loft. If one somehow managed to watch this arrangement with shut eyes, the going with visuals would not be envisioned intelligently in ones head. As in the scene where Frank and his sidekicks beat Jeffery to the strains of Candy Colored Clown, Lynch compares a scene of mind blowing viciousness with a soundtrack of eccentricity and bliss. The melody is additionally noteworthy to the watcher, who has taken to relate the tune, or if nothing else its verses, with Frank Booth what's more, his sickening attitude. Here, the tune is utilized for representative and metadiegetic purposes (Ktepi), both to strife with the visual edge and to help us to remember Franks inescapable danger. He leaves, and the music cuts unexpectedly as he closes the condo entryway. Diving the steps to leave, he sees the fashionable man drawing closer. Strains of what must be depicted as trouble maker music swell, jumping in volume and power as Jeffery understands that the man is Frank in camouflage. Jeffery runs back to Dorothys condo, the music appears to pursue him as he goes. After he sets up Frank with his smart radio transmission, he stows away in the wardrobe. As Frank enters the condo and starts to chase Jeffery down, the music swells

When Should Companies Split An Analysis of Ebay and Paypal Split

When Should Companies Split An Analysis of Ebay and Paypal Split Every day, there seems to be a constant stream of companies opening their doors and businesses jumpstarting their operations. This does not come as a surprise, as people are always coming up with business ideas and will go to great lengths to get these ideas implemented and take shape. In the thriving and competitive world of business, it is also common to hear talks about mergers and acquisitions, as well as expansions and bankruptcies. Businesses acquiring other businesses and companies joining forces with other similar companies seem to be the norm, especially for those that are eyeing growth and further development.Just as you will hear a lot of businesses merging and joining forces, there are also businesses that take the other route: they split. This is often seen in the case of giant corporations and very large companies. © Shutterstock.com | ByEmoThis article provides insights about 1) reasons for company splits, 2) when should a company be split, 3) the eBay and PayPal split.REASONS FOR COMPANY SPLITSWe can probably enumerate more than a dozen reasons why this or that company should split. However, there are three main reasons why companies decide to break off in half, or in various pieces.1.     To improve organizational focus and strengthen managementOften, in the case of large companies that have complex structures, there is a great possibility of the structure becoming convoluted and messy. A company split is performed in order to clean it up.Take, for example, the case of the information technology giant Hewlett Packard. Its organizational structure is comprised of several groups or divisions, such as the IPG or the Imaging and Printing Group (for imaging and printing systems, products and technology), the PSG or the Personal Systems Group (for personal computers), the EB or the Enterprise Bus iness (which includes HP Technology Services and various Enterprise Security Services), and the HP Software Division, to name a few.On October 6, 2014, HP announced its plans of a company split, separating the enterprise or corporate products and services business from the personal computer and printer business. The result would be two companies: HP Inc, which will focus on the consumer-facing hardware, such as printers, personal computers, and the like, and HP Enterprise, which will be devoted to the enterprise-focused products and services. The targeted completion date of the split is October 2015.Analysts reflect that the organizational mess that spurred HP to decide on a company split can be blamed on the fact that it dipped its fingers on too many pies at once. It already has quite an extensive and diverse product mix, and that is already one cause of confusion, but then it started to go after corporate clients, as well as homeowners and other direct consumers. In short, its at tention was now divided and focusing on one thing at a time is going to be difficult. The company split will then allow HP to remind management about what is truly important for them. The respective management of the two companies will then be able to focus on their businesses, without being affected by the other.2.     To maximize shareholder valueIn the case of the upcoming HP split, the stakes of the shareholders of the original single company will be divided equally between HP Inc and HP Enterprise.Keep in mind that shareholders are more concerned about cash flow and getting a return on their investments in the business. Naturally, the growth of a business will mean higher returns for them. Therefore, they would appreciate seeing a company take aggressive measures in order to achieve that growth, especially if the company is clearly being held back from doing so.A company split will help accelerate growth, especially if one business manages to separate itself from a company that cannot seem to keep up. In the case of HP, it turned out that the consumer-facing PC and printer segment became so huge, accounting for around half of the revenue of the entire company. The other segments seem to be lagging behind in comparison, so shareholders were likely feeling a bit antsy since the synergy is no longer there. They are no longer benefiting from each other, and so shareholders see that their investments are not being maximized.By making the split, both of the two separated companies will be more focused. HP Inc can grow freely, and HP Enterprises can also implement its strategies for growth. Each company can now pursue their growth strategies independently and make their investment decisions.3.     To optimize investmentsShared ownership can hamper segments from making investment optimizations decisions. They cannot freely decide on how to allocate investment dollars for their strategies, divisions, and projects without first having to confer with the other segmen t. In a complex structure such as HP, there tends to be a hierarchy or prioritization, and if the segment is slightly low on the priority list, they will not be able to allocate investments properly and efficiently.Once the split has been closed, HP Inc and HP Enterprises can now separately channel their respective investment dollars to the right areas of the business.WHEN SHOULD A COMPANY BE SPLIT?When it comes to company splits, timing is also very crucial. Just as there is a right time to start a business or to think about merging it with another, there is also a right time to effect a split. Here are the tell-tale signs that a company should consider splitting up.When one segment of the business is relying on another segment for its survival. When it is clear that one segment is already suffering because it is used to “feed” the other segment, it is time to think about making a permanent separation. If you do not act accordingly, the non-performing segment may just drag the other performing segment. When the business, as a whole, cannot keep up with the growth and advancements in the market and industry it belongs to. This is often seen in the case of tech companies. Technological innovations keep on springing left and right, and it is possible that a segment of the business may be able to keep up while the other segment could not. Split the segments into two businesses instead so the slow-growing business segment can better focus on its own “backyard”.When the investors of the business have different preferences. One group may prefer that the business take aggressive steps towards growth and gaining a bigger chunk of the market. On the other hand, another group may be content with the way things are going, provided the business is getting a steady income and growing steadily, albeit slowly. These difference in opinion may be a reason to consider going for a split.THE EBAY AND PAYPAL SPLITThe separation of Ebay and Paypal is one of the hottest news to hit the business front in recent years.BackgroundPaypal, the worldwide online payments system and currently one of the largest internet payment companies in the world, was established in 1998 but became an eBay subsidiary when the e-commerce giant acquired it in 2002. It was considered to be a match made in heaven, as Paypal became the default payment method used by most eBay users, accounting for over 70% of all eBay auctions.Paypal has shown an impressive growth rate in the following decade, most notable of which are its acquisition of the VeriSign payment solution, its partnership with MasterCard, the enhancement of its fraud management systems through the purchase of the startup Fraud Sciences, and its acquisition of another online payments company called Bill Me Later. Most recently, Paypal also became partners with Discover Card and also acquired engagement software developer IronPearl and the payment gateway BrainTree. It became even bigger when it decided to move offline, allowing customers to make Paypal payments in stores, and not just online. In the beginning, Paypal greatly relied on eBay transactions for the volume of payments made through its system. However, as the years passed and Paypal became more proactive, it was able to get payments through and from channels other than eBay. Case in point: almost 50% of payments processed by Paypal were through eBay auctions back in 2009. In 2014, that figure was down to barely 30%. It is also earning huge margins and is even expected to exceed half of the total earnings of eBay in several years. eBay CEO John Donahoe even predicted that, come 2018, only 15% of Paypal’s annual revenues will come from eBay, with the remaining 85% coming from other sources. These recent developments have certainly placed Paypal in a very good position. In fact, it can be clearly seen that Paypal no longer needs eBay to sustain itself.Reason for the Ebay Paypal SplitThere were many speculations on why Paypal has decided t o go its way now, separate from eBay. Some said several investors were already itching for the online payments company to go independent because it is already “wasted inside eBay”. Others said that the competition with Apple and other online payment startups call for a more aggressive stance in claiming its exclusive market share. Those are valid points, and perhaps they hold more than a little water. However, the primary reason for the split is clearly the fact that Paypal can already stand solidly on its own two feet, and it will be able to take greater strides on its own, unhindered by management from eBay.Together, eBay and Paypal have proven to be a strong business. Separately, they will be even stronger. Both companies agree that the synergy â€" and its benefits â€" to the two segments are dwindling or declining. By splitting, the two entities will still be able to co-exist via arm’s length transactions, where they will benefit even more than when they were under one umbr ella.In the statement released by Donahoe regarding the impending split, he also acknowledged how the market and industry landscape has been evolving and becoming more challenging. Businesses are presented with more opportunities that they can take advantage of. The split, he says, will unlock shareholder value, seeing as it can be more aggressive in how it attacks the market and further deepens its hold. The future for both companiesAfter the split, Paypal will now be a publicly held company, separate from its former parent company, eBay. Dan Schulman, formerly of American Express, was named as President of Paypal while current President of eBay Marketplaces, Devin Wenig, will become the new CEO of eBay.Whether the split turns out to be a good idea or a bad one is yet to be seen. However, the figures are good for both companies, and they are expected to be even better. Clearly, the split has been thought through, and the efforts made to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible are obvious. It was a good idea for the two companies to decide to remain friends after the split. They even signed an agreement that prohibits them from competing against each other with respect to their core businesses. Ebay will not establish its payments system while Paypal cannot set up its marketplace to rival eBay. Both parties, however, are not prohibited from working with other external direct competitors. For example, Paypal can provide its payment systems service to other marketplaces for physical goods while eBay can employ other online payment companies for its transactions. In the event, however, that Paypal will be acquired by another e-commerce company (a rival of eBay), this would give eBay the go-ahead to build its own payments system, but only after giving a 15- to 20-month notice in advance to Paypal.Analysts say that, in the long term, the split will eventually make the two companies targets for acquisition by larger rivals. In the case of eBay, a possible acquir er is the Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba. Meanwhile, competition in the payments space is becoming even stiffer, especially with the recent entry of Apple Pay into the fray. The separation, however, could be seen as a good time for Paypal and eBay to focus on their core businesses: eBay on its marketplace business and Paypal on its payments system. While it is true that the spin-off does not, in any way, affect the ever-increasing rate of competitors springing up left and right, it will, however, put them in a better position to face down these threats separately.

The Asian Athlete A Cultural Icon Of Chinese American...

The Asian athlete are often seen as the model minority for their overly conforming attitudes towards American culture (Martin, 2015). The Asian athlete offers the image of the patriotic immigrant subject who asks little to nothing of the nation and praises the nation for the opportunities it presents (Joo, 2012). One example is found by Mayeda (1999) regarding Japanese pitcher Hideo Nomo’s first year in the major league (1995), as the American sports media viewed him conforming entirely to American beliefs and values. According to the author, Nomo embraced this perception by sacrificing personal comforts and remaining quiet to better help his team and teammates on the Los Angeles Dodgers. Former Houston Rockets center Yao Ming represented model citizenry in displaying a good balance of an ideal Asian, in that he was able to compete against non-Asian athletes and still maintain his individuality as a Chinese citizen to become a cultural icon of Chinese American communities (Bai rner, 2008). As part of the model minority view of self-discipline, Asian star athletes are seen as overcoming obstacles of discrimination by staying humble, quiet, and safe (Joo, 2012). For the most part, Asian athletes are praised for assimilating into U.S sports by being team players, behaving as obedient students of their coaches and avoiding negative attention on their personal lives. Dominant mainstream sport media organizations have produced images of Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao as one of thoseShow MoreRelatedAdidas Marketing Plan20779 Words   |  84 Pagessimpler†©website,†©and†©an†©increase†©in†©advertisements†©and†©commercials†©for†©specific†©products,†© as†©opposed†©to†©just†©focusing†©on†©promoting†©the†©adidas†©brand†©as†©a†©whole.†©Finally,†©we†© recommend†©that†©adidas†©aggressively†©pursue†©gaining†©market†©sh are†©in†©emerging†©Asian†© markets,†©especially†©China,†©since†©there†©is†©yet†©to†©be†©an†©established†©leader†©there†©in†©the†© sporting†©goods†©industry.†© †© Currently†©adidas†©is†©essentially†©surviving†©in†©the†©market,†©but†©it†©is†©overshadowed†©by†©its†© biggest†©competitor†©Nike.†©By†©following†©these†©five†©recommendationsRead MoreAdidas Marketing Plan20768 Words   |  84 Pagessimpler†©website,†©and†©an†©increase†©in†©advertisements†©and†©commercials†©for†©specific†©products,†© as†©opposed†©to†©just†©focusing†©on†©promoting†©the†©adidas†©brand†©as†©a†©whole.†©Finally,†©we†© recommend†©that†©adidas†©aggressively†©pursue†©gaining†©market†©share†©in†©emerging†©Asian†© markets,†©especially†©China,†©since†©there†©is†©yet†©to†©be†©an†©established†©leader†©there†©in†©the†© sporting†©goods†©industry.†© †© Currently†©adidas†©is†©essentially†©surviving†©in†©the†©market,†©but†©itâ € ©is†©overshadowed†©by†©its†© biggest†©competitor†©Nike.†©By†©following†©these†©five†©recommendationsRead MoreAnalysis of Nike Inc.9194 Words   |  37 Pagesearly 1980’s. Domestic Violence Against Indigenous Women - 947 Words

In the article â€Å"Domestic violence against indigenous women is everybody’s problem† domestic violence is depicted as a serious social problem that involves â€Å"unspeakable acts of violence† that leaves victims experiencing fear and despair (Taylor 2014). More specifically, the social construction of domestic violence will be discussed with an emphasis on Aboriginal women and a typology of intimate partner violence. The social construction of domestic violence has serious implications for victims of domestic abuse because there is a failure to address the processes that perpetuate the violence. Instead, domestic violence is addressed through the illusion of social support. What is evident is that domestic violence is a social problem that requires comprehensive services, particularly for indigenous women, to address the complexity of the interaction between the individual’s social location and the causes that lead to the violence. The article constructs domestic violence as an issue of gender, race and socioeconomic status. Women are identified as the â€Å"majority† of victims (Taylor 2014). Consequently, the article conceptually represents domestic violence as events of intimate terrorism where one partner violently terrorizes the other partner to gain complete control over the relationship, which is entirely perpetrated by men (Johnson 2012). With that said, Johnson (2012) points out that majority of domestic violence is situational couple violence, where both the man and theShow MoreRelatedColonialism And Sexual Violence Against Indigenous Women851 Words   |  4 PagesSexual Violence Against Indigenous Women In American Culture our idea of Native Culture is one that is still very much rooted in the past. Assess the strengths of the UK constitution free essay sample

There are various strengths of the UK constitution; these include the fact that the constitution is flexible, it protects the rights of citizens and finally it gives power to the executive. The UK and its constitution, in my opinion, is a very strong unit, this being shown through the points listed above and consequently explained below. One strength of the UK constitution is the flexibility that it has, for the reason that the constitution is uncodified or unwritten and is therefore not entrenched in law. Due to the fact that the UK’s constitution is uncodified or unwritten, it has an opportunity to modernise itself to the ever changing society or any other new circumstances that may arise. An example of the flexibility of the UK’s constitution is the recent implementation of the Same Sex Marriages Act (2013). This was brought in due to the number of LGBT people that wanted to get married, but, because of the current laws that were in place, could not. This shows one of the ways in which the constitution does modernise itself in terms of society. However, the flexibility that is expressed by the fact that it is unwritten may in fact be manipulated if the ability to change the constitution were to â€Å"fall into the wrong hands†. For example, if somebody completely left wing or completely right were to come into power, they could effectively manipulate the system and change the constitution to suit them and their supporters. While this argument is an effective argument, it is doubtful that the government of today will allow a person, hypothetically with close-minded views such as these, to be put in any place of power. Overall, today’s government, in terms of flexibility does not stand a high risk of being manipulated, as there are appropriate measures in place to stop this from happening. A second strength of the UK constitution is the way in which it protects the citizens of the UK, and the rights of these individuals. The UK has a duty to protect the rights of its citizens, as this is a fundamental human right; this is listed in the Human Rights Act (HRA) as â€Å"respect for privacy and family life. † Due to the increasing use of technology, and the creation of new pieces of technology, each more advanced than the one prior, it is difficult for this to always be upheld. An example of this type of protection, or where protection has not been maintained is the Leveson inquiry. On the 13th July 2011, David Cameron announced that he would, with the help of the courts, be launching a two-part investigation into the role of the press and police in the phone-hacking scandal. The main victims of the phone-hacking were celebrities; the HRA applies to all citizens not just regular citizens. Because of the fact that these people are celebrities, doesn’t give journalists the right to invade their privacy. This is one of the main reasons as to why the government seems to, more often than not be infringing on peoples’ privacy. Taking on board that this is an accurate statement; it is more often than not, organisations that have a link with the government, or certain politicians, rather than the actual government themselves. Therefore, it is clear that, to some extent the government does try to protect the privacy of the citizens of the UK as best it can, however people can sometimes get past this barrier and can therefore infringe on a person’s privacy. A final strength of the UK constitution is fact that it gives power to the Executive. The UK constitution gives power to the executive as it gives them the responsibility to implement laws and policies that have been made by Parliament. The reason that the job is given to these people is because they are already in power and therefore will have knowledge on how to implement the laws and policies, for example the same law may be implemented in two different situations in two completely different ways. An example of this again is the Same Sex Marriages Act (2013). The combination of all the different politicians in the Executive and the knowledge that they have works in the favour of the laws that are being implemented, as the Executive understands the best way to deal with each individual case. Linking back to same sex marriage law being implemented, the law allows same sex couples to get married, preserves the law from the previous marriage act of the Church of England stating only opposite sex couples could be married on these premises, and also gives certain religious individuals and organisations the ‘opt in’ clause rather than opt out. On the other hand, the government, in recent years has been accused of becoming too powerful, due to the power and responsibility that they have regarding implementation of laws in the UK. Similar to the flexibility point that I mentioned earlier, the Executive have the opportunity to manipulate the system, what I mean by this is, they can take these laws and/or policies and alter the way that they will be implemented, and therefore changing the law, to a certain degree, in order to suit them. However, accepting that this may be a logical argument, it is highly doubtful that the Executive would have the ability to constantly do this, due to various controls that the government will have put in place to prevent this from happening. In conclusion, the strengths of the UK constitution do outweigh the counterarguments stated above. Both sides of the argument do indeed have merit, but the likelihood of the UK’s government ever manipulating the laws so much just to suit their own opinions is a very out there and perhaps weak suggestion.

A BRIEF LOOK AT OBAMACARE Essays - Free Essays, Term Papers

A BRIEF LOOK AT OBAMACARE Essays - Free Essays, Term Papers A BRIEF LOOK AT OBAMACARE Health care reform in the United States has a long history. Reforms have often been proposed but have rarely been accomplished. Har ry Truman in the 1940s , Richard Nixon in the 1970s, and Bill Clinton in the 1990s have given important struggles for a law that would cover every US citizen in health insurance. After all of them, when Obama became president, he brought the health system, which is called ObamaCare. In March, 2010, US President Barack Obama's healthcare bill passed by Congress. It aims to provide about 50 million Americans, 16 percent of the population, health care. "We have decided that it's time to give every American quality healthcare." said Barack Obama in his speech. The health system in America is the world's most expensive health system. Despite the fact that all kinds of health services, medicines and health insurance premiums are expensive, the quality of health care in the United States is low. The structure of the health insurance system in the USA is as follows: State pays health insurance expenses for government officials and soldiers. (These are 2 percent of the population.), Those who are very old or very poor benefit from two different applications called Medicare and Medicaid, which are funded from the budget. The state pays for these two different applications.(Medicare covers 15 per cent of the total population, 16 per cent of Medicaid.), In large-scale industrial establishments, employees in companies, benefit from insurance paid by premium establishments.(For nearly 45 percent of the population, these programs provide health insurance.), Personal insurances, group insurances are usually very expensive and have limited coverage. (Only 6 percent of the population benefits from private insurance with their own means.) Many Americans lack health care. The proportion of uninsured has been rising steadily since the 1970s. Except for the United States, no rich nation in the world fails to provide comprehensive health care that is free or inexpensive to its entire population. For this reason, health reform has been discussed in the United States for years. The health reform was a promise that Obama could fulfill. This reform is the product of Obama's promise to provide "h ealth care for everybody's budget". The Law on Affordable Healthcare, known publicly as Obamacare , entered into force gradually from 2010 onwards, despite the endless opposition of the Republicans. The pr oportion of uninsured people in the country has fallen from 15.7 percent to 9.2 percent. On the other hand, the Republican Party has strongly opposed Obamacare from the very beginning on the grounds that it infringes on individual freedoms and the US Constitution because it obliges health insurance. The new president, Donald Trump, showed his determination after the election that he was determined to cancel Obamacare except for a few parts. Thus, Obama's success is a controversial issue, although it seems to be among the promises Obama has made, it does not seem to be long-lived. Obamacare, officially called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPAC), but more often called the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for short, reformed health care system as a whole. Obamacare was signed into law to reform the health care industry by President Barack Obama on March 23,2010 and upheld by the Supreme Court ruling on June 28,2012. This ruling involved changing the law to allow states to opt-out of expanding Access to Medicaid. Obamacare was signed into law to address the national health care crisis and to ma k e insurance more affordable and available for 44 million uninsureds. The Affordable Care Act 2010 is a reformation of healthcare system to be t ter be able to aid and treat the large percentage of law and middle income Americans who suff e r everyday without the proper health insurance. Obamacare, offered subsidies to obtain affordable quality health insurance and also did things like expand Medicaid to almost 20 million more Americans. The health care law has already aided millions of Americans afford be t ter quality health insurance, helped to reform the health insurance industry, and has expanded Americans healthcare rights. The healthcare law also aims to reduce wasteful spending and healthcare programs that are not working. The Affordable Care Act expands

Discussion Question Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Discussion Question - Essay Example The dividend cut was aimed at reducing the company’s debts of $62 million (USATODAY, 2000). The idea was that with reduced debts the annual interest on the debt load would decrease but many investors rely on the dividend income. This was something unusual that AT&T had done in 2000 because even during the Great Depression when other industrial giants had reduced their dividend, AT&T had been able to maintain it (Forbes, 2000). This drastic step was taken so that the savings through lower dividend would help them clear the debt, enhance profits and invest in growth, which was aimed at maximizing shareholder wealth. In 2000, there was corporate restructuring and the company’s profits were split in four ways and hence such a decision had to be taken. Apart from the year 2000, AT&T has been consistently registered growth in dividend payouts while the earnings per share (EPS) have been decreasing since 1998 (DGI, 2008). The annual dividend payouts have increased over the past ten years at an annual average of 4.80% even though there has been lack of growth in profits over the past decade. A 5% growth in dividend suggests that the dividend payouts double every 14 or 15 years. The quarterly dividends that AT&T paid in 2007 were double of what they paid in 1991. Even though the dividend yield at AT&T is above average, the EPS has declined. Unless there is growth in the EPS the company will not be able to maintain its current dividend policy of annual growth in dividend payouts. T-Mobile International, one of Deutsche Telekom AGs (NYSE:DT) four strategic divisions, is one of the worlds leading international wireless communications providers. T-Mobile has a dividend yield of 7% which is considered to be quite decent (Vinzant, 2008). Except for 2001, T-Mobile has been maintaining growth in dividend payouts because they believe in paying their shareholders

The Economics of Speculative Construction Development Term Paper

The Economics of Speculative Construction Development - Term Paper Example The housing sector in 2010 had recorded sales of 276,000 houses in the urban and semi-urban areas. This figure in last few years has increased to approximately 454,000 (Athey, 2009). Although the housing sector has been earning steady revenues, the required rate of growth has not been satisfactory. Common people are finding it risky to invest in property by acquiring loans due to the consistent rise of interests. Post financial crisis, most of the financial institutions have established stringent policies in respect of providing housing loans. The housing sector of the U.K. however plays a major role in the development of the economy as a whole. Even though the sector has been incurring slow growths, the revenue obtained from the housing and development sector is seen to be persistently high. The demands for houses have remained high as the economy is quite prosperous. Individual in the U.K have a high level of disposable income, due to which they find it feasible to invest in proper ty (Berry and McGreal, 2003). Research and studies in this sector have indicated that the demand for houses is expected to rise steadily. Construction companies are, hence, considering it profitable to develop sites and invest in properties of the U.K (Harrison and Leitch, 2010). In order to boost the housing and development sector, foreign investors are devising different types of schemes. Since population is consistently rising, it is essential for property developers to construct more homes. A recent survey had estimated that it is essential to build at least 150,000 new homes each year so as to be able meet housing requirements of the growing population (Haveman and Sexton, 2008). In the recent years, many real estate developers from the U.S. have increased their investments in the U.K. The positive market trends and steady growth in real estate have been successful in attracting foreign investors (Berry

The Public Transport In London Sociology Essay

The Public Transport In London Sociology Essay London is the capital of England and is one of the largest cities of the world as well of the United Kingdom. The city has a huge population of 8,174,100, making it the  most populous municipality in the European Union. All these people have to move in order to lead their life and a huge number of the population take the private transport for travelling. Although there are many people who travel on their private vehicles, an appreciable number of people take the public transport. London being one of the most modern cities of the world also offers many options to its citizens for travelling. There are  underground train services,  London Buses,  Tram link, the  Docklands Light Railway,  over ground, air transports and other options. A report suggests that annually in London, there are a staggering 2 billion of bus journeys, 1 billion of underground journeys and 800 million journeys on National Rail networks. Body All the people of London travel in the public transports throughout the day. People travel, go to their work, students go to schools by these public transports. A survey was made on the public transport in London by taking opinions from the people of London. The survey was done with people of different ages. The people were asked different questions and their answers were studied. The question asked comprised of two types. One category had one word answers and the other had elaborate options. However, all the questions were multiple choice questions. We gathered a clear idea about the public transport in London from the survey. The first ten questions were one word answers. The survey takers just ticked on any one of the option between yes and no. We found different opinions from different people. Peoples responses also differed with their ages and economic capacities. The first ten questions are given in the table below, along with their answers. The answers are given in percentage after making a calculation from the responses and opinions of the people. Serial Question Answer in Percentage 01 Do you travel in Public transport? 60% 02 Do you have a private transport? 50% 03 Are you a regular traveller? 50% 04 Do you have any income? 70% 05 Do you go to work by public transport? 90% 06 Is Public Transports of London comfortable? 60% 07 Is it cheaper than private transports? 100% 08 Do you find the Public Transports crowd? 80% 09 Do other members of your family travel in public transports? 60% 10 Are you happy with the Public Transports of London? 70% Table No. 01 The outcome of the survey helps to draw a picture of the Public transport of London. The study shows that more than half of the people of London avail public transport. Here we see the figure stands 60%. In addition to that it is seen that a good number of people do not have a private vehicle. Now, the next question asked to the survey takers was if they were regular travellers. 50% of them agreed that they were regular passengers. It meant that they were regular customers and that they depended of public transport. People travel and make journeys for various purposes. The study shows that most of the people went to work in public transport. So, public transport is a very essential medium for going to the work place. It is at the same time a very prominent option for the employees. However, one thing cannot be denied at all. During rush hours and even at some other time of the day, there are huge crowd in these transports. This problem does not happen at all time but mostly during rush hours. The problem is not because there is less number of vehicles but that there are more people at the same time. The scenery is common while people start for office and then again when they return. For this reason 80% of the people said that public transports were filled with crowd. The survey went to details about the topic and about the feeling of the people. The questions were done for the other family members of the people. The individuals were asked if other members of their families used public transports as a mean of travelling. A good number of 60% of the people informed that other members of their family also travelled on these transports. This means that the families that use public transport use the maximum use of it. The last question that was asked to the survey takers was their feeling about the transport systems. It was asked if they were happy with the public transport of London. A total of 70 percent of the people said they were happy with the situation. This conveys a very positive feeling about the Public Transport of London. It also depicts that the communication system of the city is very good, developed and advanced. At the same time it is also very public friendly. The second phase of the survey was the open questions. After getting a picture of the public transport of London the purpose was to go deeper. A total of 5 open questions were asked to get a more elaborate picture. The questions were asked to know about the different types of public transports that the people used. The first of the open question was about the age of the people. The people were asked to disclose their age so that it could be calculated that which age of people took he public transport more. The chart below shows the age wise transporters. Chart No. 01 The chart clearly shows that the most of the people taking public transports are from the age of 15-30. The next group of people who take this transport are the people of aging between 30 and 45 years. Almost no people aging below 15 take the public transport and there are a few people aging 45 to 60 years old take the transports. People aging above 60 do use public transport but they are very few. It means the children are not independent, they depend on their parents. So, they normally do not travel on public transports. The do not usually travel much. If they even do, they are accompanied by their parents. The old people do less travelling, so their percent is also low. The people, who are young aging between 15 to 45 years, are the ones who take the public transport most. It is because they go to work, attain classes, and do all other travelling by the public transports. The next question that was asked to the people was their occupation. It was really needed to know which class or group of people used the public transport most. The chart below reflects the travelling of different people. Chart No. 02 The chart clearly shows which category of the people takes the public transport most. It shows that the working people use the maximum utilization. Next are the students and then are the people looking for work. People go to their work places with the public transports. The students also take this for going to their educational institutions. People who are looking for work are also taking the help of the public transport. The later questions elaborate why these people use this means. The third question that was asked to the people was that which public transports they found more comfortable. London is a city of many dwellers and there are also many options of public transports. The city firstly like all others have public buses. The city has a long and connected underground rail line. It is one of the oldest in the world but much advanced. The railway changed and advanced to the highest extends with the introduction of all the modern technologies. Normal trains are also available added with trumps. The chart below shows the percentage of the different public transports taken by the people. Chart No. 03 The chart clearly shows that most of the people of London take the underground. That means the underground rail transport holds the maximum passengers. It alone carries about 50 percent of the public. The next are the buses and then the trump. The airways is least taken by the people. Air is not so popular because it is expensive. The next question was asked which public transport was lower in cost. The options were the same. The chart below shows the result. Chart No. 04 The data shows that the underground train is the cheapest. That is one of the reasons why people take this transport. The percentage is 70 percent. The figure next to it is the bus which is about 25 percent. The last question that was asked to the people was that which transport saved more time. The chart shows the situation below. Chart No. 05 The answer to the question that which transport saves time is different from all the others. Although very few of the people took the air lines, most of them agreed that airn transport saved the time most. The percent was 70%. The reason again why it was not 100% is because of the distance. Shorter distance could easily be travelled by train and then by buses. Conclusion All the data and the discussions above show a clear picture of the transport system of London. It shows that most of the people of London do take the Public Transport. The study finds that the underground railway dominates among the public transports. London has a very well organized public transport and it is also very advanced in technology. The people living in London are also comfortable with their Public Transport.

Business Management of Owning a Construction Company Essay

Owning a construction company requires good planning whereby the management puts several measures in place to ensure that a company performs well to generate enough money that aids it run its operations. Availability of surplus raw materials is one of the important factors to consider while managing a construction company. A construction firm should have enough laborers who offer services to customers and who work at the production stage. Running a construction company requires that the management come up with a good marketing strategy that allows the company to attract as many clients as possible to allow the organization generate enough income to carry out its activities effectively. Keeping records in an organized manner makes it easy for a construction company to make references and also to avoid loss of data. Managers who plan their activities wisely and accordingly in a construction company are in a better position of elevating the profit that the company generates and to impro ve the quality of goods and services that the firm offers. Definition of Important Concepts Management is a common term that this paper uses and it means to adopt effective measures as a leader that help to run an organization in an effective manner. The term construction is also common in this analysis and it means to come up with projects such as buildings, bridges and roads using qualified personnel. Counterarguments Even though raw materials are essential in the running of a construction company, some companies lack them due to poor management which in most cases leads to the fall of a business. Other construction companies lack enough laborers and this makes the available workers to strain with their work which in most cases lowers the outcome of construction companies. Lack of effective marketing strategy and lack of proper ways of record keeping also in many instances lead to the downfall of many construction companies because they are not able to generate sufficient income from different customers and they experience confusion respectively. This report makes use of an imaginary company by the name of Davis Construction firm to expound on the management of owning a construction company. As part of its activities, this construction firm produces building bricks from clay soil, produces celling boards that builders fit inside houses, and also hires professional masons and other construction desi gners to people or organizations that want to come up with buildings. To attain its goals, the management of Davis Construction firm must take into account several measure that will help it run its activities. Availability of Raw Materials First of all, the manager of this organization must ensure that there is a continuous flow of raw materials to enable the firm continue with its production. In this case, the essential raw materials that Davis Construction firm needs are clay soil to manufacture bricks, wood chips to manufacture celling board, and sufficient water to carry out the mixing process. Other raw materials that this organization needs to produce its goods include chemicals that it uses to carry out its production. A good manager will carry out a research on the best places to acquire the raw materials so that the firms does not experience delays in its production process. To ensure a steady supply of raw materials in a construction firm, managers should have more than one source of suppliers who deliver raw materials to the company. Having more than one source of supplier who supply the same product is important because this allows a company to carry out its activities continuously not to inconvenience customers. In many instances, unreliable suppliers make business managers to consider alternative ways getting raw materials to carry out an organization’s activities (Alonso, 2007, p. 3). Another way in which the manager of this company and any other construction company can ensure constant availability of raw materials is by establishing nearby sites that generate enough raw materials to run the activities of an organization. For example, to have a constant supply of water, the manager can hire professionals to come and dig boreholes that will provide surplus water to the firm at a much cheaper cost. Availability of Workers Effective management of a construction company calls for hiring enough laborers who help in running the organization’s activities. A wise manager will therefore, put measures to ensure that the laborers share work equally and that they do not strain while carrying out their activities. The laborers in a construction firm should fall into several sections where each worker partakes in the activity of his specialization. By each worker taking part in the activities of his specialization, a construction firm will attain accuracy in all the goods it produces and all the services it offers. To get laborers of sufficient knowledge to carry out their activities, the management of Davis Construction Firm should carry out a test while recruiting laborers after ascertaining their credentials. Even though it is a common occurrence in many countries that construction activities attract workers with low educational level (ILO, 2001, p. 12), it is important for managers to hire workers with high qualification to do their job perfectly so as to come up with products and services that satisfy customers’ needs. The management should ensure that workers get sufficient training to enable them carry out their duties with preciseness. As a way of improving the technical skills of their workers, managers should organize educative seminars where other professionals offer theoretical and practical knowledge to the workers. Good managers take the initiative of helping technicians who show great ability in their duties attain further training and also to serve as motivation to the co ntractors. Managers in a construction company should also take their workers to tour different construction firms because if they fail to do this, it will be impossible to compete favorably with other construction firms. Marketing Strategies A construction company should adopt effective marketing strategies that allows it to reach customers from different geographical regions. After intense research about marketing strategies, managers in construction companies such as Davies Construction Firm should come up with a suitable way of marketing the goods and services that the firm offers. To effectively reach customers from different regions, managers who run construction firms should adopt reliable channels such as the internet and publications because these two are able to carry so much information about a company and are also able to transmit information within a very short time.
